YAMAHA MONTAGE
After a long wait, DKS finally starts making reviews! The first one is about Yamaha Montage, you can read it in the “Reviews” section on the top menu by selecting the Italian or the English flag for the language.
As previously announced, the “Reviews” section is finally available in order to expand the website and giving you a more specific content about all the single instruments. Video reviews will come soon.
The first review is about the current Yamaha’s flagship that goes to replace, after many years of honoured service, the Motif line, which production started in 2001 with the first serie that was later renamed “classic”, followed by ES (2005), XS (2007) and XF (2011) in the end.
STRUCTURE:
Montage completely revolutionizes the idea of a Yamaha workstation and it’s simply called “Music Synthesizer” with two sound engines: AWM2 coming from Motif (samples) and FM-X, an evolution of DX7, a 80’s icon, re-proposed in the early 2000 with an updated version with 8 operators in rack format, called FS-1R.
As usual for Yamaha, the design quality is at the highest levels, detail care is at the top and this means that the instrument is a great investment for those who want it to be solid, reliable and lasting over the years.
SOUNDS:
The instrument is ten times powerful than the Motif XF, the new CFX piano sound has 10 dynamics level and, this sound by itself, is equivalent of all the waverom of the previous XF generation (around 700Mb). Montage has around 7Gb of sounds and other 2Gb Flash Ram memory to import all the samples you have. Dynamics has literally improved, this way all Motif sounds are improved too and, it's easier now switching from "Pianissimo" to "Fortissimo". Montage now has the "Performance Mode" only, rather than Motif which had three categories of sounds (Voice, Performance and Master). Mixing mode is now available into the performance mode with 16 layer and 2 insert EFX per part, Master EFX...
NEWS:
Other news introduced by Montage are: the new 7" inches touch screen display, with setlist mode for a better live performance, SSS "Seamless Sound Switching" has been added and it allows to switch from performance to another performance without any cut-off. (With performance up to 8 layers only). "Super Knob" allows to control multiples parameters simultaneously like a sort of "Super Macro". Sequencer is now a "Motion Sequencer" with tempo-synchronized phrases. Polyphony is virtually three times powerful because there are now 128 note stereo polyphony available for the AWM2 section and other 128 note for the FM-X engine. Output and Input audio are now TRS with improved quality of audio signal after being converted to analog from digital for clear audio reproduction. With a single USB cable you can send 16 audio channels and receive 3 stereo channel at 24 Bit / 44.1 Khz to your favourite DAW.
CONCLUSIONS:
Yamaha takes a huge step ahead with Montage. It has been a long waiting but it was worth it because this is a far better instrument than Motif. If you are used to the classic workstation you might be skeptical about this instrument but, it's an amazing synth. Montage it's sold together with the Cubase AI license so you don't need any classic sequencer anymore. We only have to wait for Korg and Roland's responce to this amazing instrument now.
